Edna Roberts

Edna R. Roberts, 81 of Neptune, New Jersey, died Sunday, September 14 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, NJ.
Born in Greenville, Alabama, she retired from the Neptune Township School District in May 1995 after 33 years of service where she taught first grade at Ridge Avenue School and third grade at Green Grove Elementary School. When her husband’s Army career moved the family to Japan from October 1965 through July 1968, she continued her career there as a kindergarten teacher.
She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in May 1952 from Alabama State College in Montgomery, Alabama. Shortly after, she and her husband Lonnie, relocated to New Jersey where she joined and was an active member of Second Baptist Church of Asbury Park for more than fifty years. At Second, she served as a member of the Zenobia Ware Scholarship Committee. A desire to serve lead to her involvement with a number of local community organizations. She was a member of the Central Jersey Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs Inc. since 1969 and obtained her Life Membership status with NANBPWC in July 1976. As a member, she served in numerous capacities including Second Vice President, Chaplain and Life Membership Chairperson. A great Southern cook with a fondness for baking, she also sponsored bake sales and donated the proceeds to Central Jersey in support of their various programs. She served for 39 years as a member of the Monmouth County Cotillion Committee, a scholarship organization that benefits high school seniors in Monmouth County. She was also a member of the North Jersey Shore Chapter of Continental Societies, Inc. for 18 year.
She is predeceased by her parents, Dock and Daisy McKee, her brother and sister William McKee and Flora Cheatham McKee, her husband Lonnie and her son-in-law William Danner V. She is survived by her loving children Sharon Roberts of New York, NY; Robin Roberts Danner of Plainfield, NJ; Ronald Roberts of Neptune, NJ; and three grandchildren Carla, William VI and James Danner all of Plainfield; her nieces Edna Fails (Douglas) and Shirley Todd (David) and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the The Zenobia/Xenia Ware Scholarship Fund, the Monmouth County Cotillion Committee Inc., The Central Jersey Club, NANBPWC Inc. or the North Jersey Chapter of Continental Societies Inc.
A funeral gathering was held at Second Baptist Church, 124 Atkins Avenue, Asbury Park, New Jersey on Friday, September 19, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 11a.m., with the service immediately following. The internment followed at Monmouth Memorial Park Cemetery, 4201 Hwy 33, Neptune, NJ.
