Shoppers who hit Greenville stores during the first weekend in August will leave with a little more jingle in their pockets.

That’s thanks to a resolution passed Monday by the Greenville City Council that authorizes the city to take part in Alabama’s 7th annual sales tax holiday.

The City of Greenville has participated in the sales tax holiday since its inception in 2006.

The holiday, which is scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 3 and end at midnight Aug. 5, covers clothing items less than $100, school supplies, books, computers and computer equipment. Each county and municipality in Alabama decides if it will waive local sales tax, collect a portion or not participate in the sales-tax-free weekend. Retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the sales tax holiday.

The Alabama Department of Revenue’s website lists Georgiana and McKenzie among the municipalities that will participate in the holiday.

Butler County voted to participate in the holiday at the County Commission’s meeting earlier this month.
