Larry Green

Larry E. Green Sr., of Headland, Tumbleton Community, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family.
Following visitation from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2009, a celebration of his life was held at 3:30 p.m. at Gateway Church with Pastor Ruth Jones officiating. Burial with military honors followed in the Gardens of Memory with Byrd Funeral Home of Dothan directing.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial contributions be made to the Gateway Church “Building Fund,” 1641 West Alabama Highway 134, Headland, AL 36345 or Wiregrass Hospice of Dothan, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL 36302.
Mr. Green was born August 28, 1948 in Greenville to the late William Ralph and Sarah Syble Moore Green. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an older brother, Joe Green and an older sister, Paulette Green.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Doris Till Green, Headland; a son, Chip Green and wife, Kristin Green of Camp Springs; two daughters, Sunshine Green English and husband, Boyd English of Twin City, GA and Tracy Green Singletary of Headland; four precious granddaughters, Kellie Lynn Jones, Jenna Brooke Singletary, Maci Kendall English and Abbi Vaughan English; one spoiled rotten grandson, Jay Singletary; an honorary son, David H. Jones of Headland; and two angels, Lily Goodwin and Sabrina Neiswanger, both of Headland. He is also survived by four sisters, Joyce Skipper and her husband, Danny, Francis Powell and her husband, Billy, Nita Smith and her husband, Danny, and Pat Middleton and her husband, Mike, all of Georgiana; four brothers, Acy Green of Selma, Mike Green and his wife, Teresa, of Georgiana, Randy Green and his wife, Phyllis, of Sautee, Ga., and Rickey Green and his wife, Leslie, of Georgiana and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves his closest friends, Tony and Ruth Jones, along with his Covenant family of 30 years-plus.
Larry found the love of his life at the early age of 17 and shared more than 40 years as one.
Called to serve his country in 1968, Mr. Green dedicated four years to the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. At the time of his honorable discharge, Petty Officer Second Class SFP5 Green was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and a Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation. Serving in several ministries, he was a member of Gateway Church, where he worshiped and invested his time and love for the youth of the church. Mr. Green faithfully shared his craft and demonstrated his work ethic with fellow welders at Farley Nuclear Plant, leaving the plant just two years short of retirement. An avid fishermen and hunter, he enjoyed spending time in the woods and on the water with family, especially his son, grandson and friends. His favorite past time was participating and sometimes, instigating, mischief with his grandchildren.
The family wishes to say a special thank you to the nurses at Home Healthcare and Wiregrass Hospice.
Active pallbearers were Don Charest of Coker Creek, Tenn., Alan Palmer of Wicksburg, Nick Adair of Dothan, Kent Whiddon of Dothan and Buddy Stewart of Ashford, and Rickey Heath of Headland.
