Eagles down Meadowview

The Fort Dale Eagles downed Meadowview Academy last Tuesday in Greenville.

The varsity girls scored a 45-25 win and the boys won 76-41.

In the boys' game, the Eagles jumped on Meadowview early in the first quarter, outscoring them 25-10.

Three players found themselves in double digits.

Seniors Mal Winters and Marshall Watts and Charles Mitchell scored 48 of the team's 76 points.

Watts had 16 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double performance.

Winters led the team with 19 points as he hit a blistering eight of nine shots from the field.

Mitchell hit six of eight from the field en route to 13 points.

From the field, the Eagles shot 60 percent by going 30 of 50 from the hardwood.

By the half, the Eagles had a comfortable 51-17 lead.

Varsity head coach Reggie Mantooth said the boys did a good job of shooting the ball.

"We were able to get on top of them early," Mantooth said.

Junior guard Michael Holyfield scored seven in the win.

FDA guard Stephen Sorrells dropped in nine including a three-for-three, performance from beyond the arc.

In the fourth, FDA held on for the 35 point win.

The girls won their game by twenty points.

In the first quarter, both teams

combined to score 14 together.

The Eagles had a 9-5 edge.

However, in the second frame of play, FDA broke out for 14 to realize a 23-9 lead at halftime.

Senior guard Melissa Gilbert led all scorers with 16 points.

Senior forward Abbie Gardner scored nine and snatched 12 rebounds in the win.

In the third, the Eagles exchanged baskets with Meadowview. In the fourth, the Eagles closed the game with a 15-7 run.

Senior Jami Barlow had nine points and six rebounds. She also recorded five steals in the win.

"We played very well defensively," the coach said.

The Eagles will play at Sumiton Academy today at 2 p.m.

On Feb. 1, the Eagles will venture across town to play Greenville Academy.
