The Greenville Tigers fell to 1-2 on the season as Red Level swept a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 25, in Greenville.

The losses were attributed to inexperience and errors.

GHS head baseball coach John Williamson said that the team made too many errors deciding the outcome of the ball games.

"When one error was made in the game, the team fell prone to make even more errors. It basically snowballed on us," Williamson said.

One after the other, the errors hurt the Tigers' chances of realizing a win in the double header.

However, Williamson said his squad hit the ball well.

"We were hitting the ball good and getting our opportunities to score but those errors did us in at crucial times," the coach said.

With men on base in the opening game, senior third baseman Vincent Savage belted a home run after Red Level took the lead early.

Savage also nearly cleared another homer but missed it by a couple of feet.

"George Nick Autrey and Ledyard Williamson also hit the ball well in the double header," Williamson said.

Williamson went 3-5 in the first ball game while Autrey found himself on base numerous times.

Autrey, Savage and Williamson are the only three returning starters from last year's squad.

"We have a young team that is inexperienced at this point," he said.

The only others who had playing time last year were senior catcher Tony Norris and second baseman William Phillips.

"The seniors are trying toprovide leadership for the younger ones and I'm grateful for their dedication," Williamson said.

The Tigers lost seven seniors from last year's team.

Williamson said the team practiced on their fielding over the last couple of days leading up to their next game.

"We practiced on infielding and oufielding.

We didn't touch the bats. That area was of no concern after seeing the double header," Williamson said.

Williamson said the team needs to commit fewer errors in their games.

"If someone makes an error, they need to mentally take it out of their mind and concentrate on the next pitch. Dwelling on an error doesn't

help," he said.

Williamson said the team will improve over the course of the season and the youthful players will gain experience in the meantime.

The Tigers will play Hillcrest-Evergreen at 4 p.m. on March 2 at home.
