A unit inside Greenville’s LV Stabler Memorial Hospital will celebrate its “crystal” anniversary on Friday: Senior Care turns 15-years-old.
The unit, with a staff of approximately 20, opened in 1994. At least two employees, outreach coordinator Heidi Smith and program director Melvia Carter, have been there since day one. The unit is led by Dr. Fortunate Ovbiagele, medical director and psychiatrist.
Smith said the unit provides treatment of all types of mental illnesses – suicidal tendencies, delirium, obssessive-compulsive behavior, etc. – and has treated an estimated 3,000 patients over the last 15 years.
“Our success is because we receive a lot of referrals from across the state and even outside it,” she said.
Smith describes the unit’s treatment as “highly individualized.”
“It’s also around the clock and you can never really slack off,” she said. “All of the patients have different needs, especially at night.”
Admission into the treatment facility is voluntary, said Smith.
The celebration is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at the hospital. – From Staff Reports
