Mayor Dexter McLendon announced the formation of a "Skate Park Committee" during the Greenville City Council meeting Monday night.

The group will study the feasibility of creating a skate park in the city. Councilman Gale Slagley will chair the committee. Others on the committee are Police Chief Lonzo Ingram, Parks and Recreation director Jerome Harris, Quentin Albritton, Nicholas Hartley and Ryan Kennedy. Albritton, Hartley and Kennedy were among the more than half dozen skating enthusiasts who attended Monday's council session.

Ingram encouraged McLendon to appoint the skaters to the committee since they are the most interested in a skating facility.

"We're going to get something done," said McLendon.

Wayne E. Brooks and Joby Norman were reappointed to the planning commission. John L. Peagler was reappointed to the Housing Authority board, and Magoo Hamilton was appointed to replace Nell Bowden, who resigned.

Calvin Steindorff was reappointed as a supernumerary member of the Board of Adjustments, and Richard A. Harmon was appointed to replace W.J. Longmire as a supernumerary member. Longmire is deceased.

Steve Norman will head a committee to study the rotation of the depository for the city's General Fund.

"The general fund is currently rotated between Peoples Bank and Whitney Bank, but the other two banks have approached me about being in that rotation," said McLendon.

The current arrangement was established in 1992, according to McLendon.

The council also:

Approved the emergency demolition of the Myrtle Frymire property at 224 Second Street.

Approved the rezoning of property presently zoned as residential agricultural to highway commercial. The request by Patricia McNaughton was for property on Interstate 65 South.

Approved the issuance of a restaurant liquor license for Ruby Tuesday's.

Approved the issuance of a retail beer lecense (off-premise only) for Terry Lee Williams and Danny Williams dba Max Mart West.

Approved the issuance of a retail beer license (off premise only) for Robert McCann dba Greenville Citgo and Produce.

Disapproved the issuance of a retail beer license and retail wine license (on-or-off-premise consumption) for Ruby Lee Hill dba Hill's Caf.

Approved participation in the Summer Feeding Program.

The City of Greenville will be closed for business Monday, Jan. 15 in observance of Robert E. Lee/Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

Monday garbage will be picked up on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
