Thomas Llewellyn Bricken, who practiced law in the Fredericksburg (Va.) area for more than 30 years and was president of several area business groups, died Tuesday, March 6, at his home in Stafford County.

He had battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, for two years.
Bricken, 63, headed the local office of Sands Anderson PC. He had been president of the Fredericksburg Rotary Club and Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors. He had also served as legal counsel for the Stafford Regional Airport Commission, and handled the airport’s first two condemnation lawsuits.

Born on March 21, 1948, in Luverne, Ala., Bricken graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1970, was a naval aviator until 1976, and later was a pilot in the Naval Reserves.

He graduated from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, and was a partner in Sheffield and Bricken, a Fredericksburg law firm, from 1979 to 1991. He also served as assistant attorney for the city of Fredericksburg from 1980 to 1986.

Bricken was preceded in death by his parents, Llewellyn Powell and Beverley Colomb Bricken, and a brother, Buford Powell Bricken, all of Mobile, Ala.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia Synowiec Bricken; two daughters, Mary Knox Bricken Flynt of Boston, Mass., and Rebecca Bricken Segal of Potomac Falls; two sisters, Mary Knox Bricken and Marion Bricken Nichols, both of Birmingham, Ala.; one brother, Benjamin Rush Bricken of Tullahoma, Tenn.; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 9, at the Princess Anne Building, 904 Princess Anne St., in Fredericksburg. A Mass was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 12, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, with a reception following.
