The Greenville Area Arts Council celebrated the big 3-0 this year, and it did so in grand fashion.

From rock-n-roll to blues to country, the GAAC tried to offer a little something for everyone. The season opened with a tribute to Buddy Holly and ended on Tuesday night with a tribute to country legends Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Each of the four shows put on by the GAAC was outstanding, but the highlight of the season may well have been a performance by the Missoula Children’s Theatre Group, which showcased the talents of local youth.

GAAC Executive Director Nancy Idland certainly thinks so.

“One of our most exciting shows for the season was the children’s theatre that came into Greenville and in one week had 50 kids performing and really enjoying the stage,” she said. “I imagine the Missoula Children’s Theatre Group will be returning in the near future.”

Let’s hope so.

I’d like to applaud Idland and the rest of the GAAC for such a wonderful season. Everyone involved deserves a standing ovation.

We are very fortunate to have a group like the GAAC that is dedicated to making the arts a part of our community.

The Camellia City may not be the Big Apple, but for at least four nights this season, our sleepy little town had plenty of big-city flair as the bright lights of the Ritz Theatre shined down on Commerce Street.

If you weren’t able to make it out to one of the four shows this season, don’t fret. I’ve got some good news for you.

You have one more chance to enjoy a fantastic theatre experience at the Ritz courtesy of the GAAC when local actors and actresses hit the stage for the group’s annual fundraiser, “Putting on the Ritz.”

Along with showcasing local talent — and believe, there’s plenty of it — the money raised through ticket sales and sponsorships will go toward bringing more professional productions Greenville in the upcoming season.

The performances, which will feature a Disney theme this year, will be held on April 26-28 at 7:30 p.m. each night. Don’t miss it.
