The city of Georgiana recently finalized the reapportionment of its voting districts, and has announced the make-up of the final five zones.
The reapportionment is required by state law after each decennial census if significant population changes have occurred in a city’s voting districts.
Georgiana City Clerk Barbara Clem said an increase in districts 2 and 4 were significant enough to warrant the redraw, but the increases weren’t large.
&uot;We had to take some area from those districts and add them to districts 1 and 5 to balance them according to the state’s formula,&uot; Clem said. &uot;But none of the areas gained enough in population that it will change things much. District 3 has remained nearly the same, so it wasn’t changed at all.&uot;
Clem said the changes amounted to a block or two, nothing more than that.
District 1 runs southwest along the CSX railway to Highway 106, then east along Highway 106 to Peagler Avenue, south along Peagler to Morgan Street, east along Morgan to Palmer Avenue, then south along Palmer to Rose Street, west along Rose to the CSX railroad, then south along the railroad line to Jones Street, west along Jones to Meeting Avenue, north along Meeting to Mill Street, then west along Mill Street to the corporate limits of Georgiana.
District 2 also runs southwest along the CSX railway to Highway 106, then east along Highway 106 to Peagler Avenue, south along Peagler to Morgan Street, east along Morgan to Palmer Avenue, then north along Palmer to Highway 106, east along 106 to the city limits.
District 3 runs from the city limits west along Highway 106 to Palmer Street, then south along Palmer to Broad Street, east along Broad Street to Holland Avenue, south along Holland to Oakwood Street, east along Oakwood to Highway 31, north on Highway 31 to Abrams Street, west along Abrams to Highway 106, then west along Highway 106 to Palmer Avenue.
District 4 runs west along Oakwood Street to Palmer Avenue, then south along Palmer Avenue to Veneer Avenue, then south to the city limits.
District 5 begins at the intersection of the southern city limits and Veneer Avenue, runs north along Veneer to Palmer Avenue, north along Palmer to Rose Street, then west along Rose to CSX railway, south along the railway line to Jones Street, west along Jones to Meeting Avenue, then north along Meeting to Mill Street, west along Mill to the city limits.
The new districts are now in effect and will be used in the next city elections.
