The Greenville girls got their first action of the season Saturday night against Calhoun, which GHS lost 38-27.
Although it was the first game of the season, head coach Ronald Bogan said he expected a better performance out of his team.
“We’ve got to work on this as a team,” he said. “We’re going to use this as a learning tool, and we’ve got a lot of potential.”
The Tigers fell behind early and struggled throughout the game to close the gap.
Greenville trailed 18-11 at halftime, but at one point in the third quarter, that margin was cut to 26-23.
The game remained close until the final minute, when Calhoun put several baskets on the board.
Lakeidra Savage was the top scorer for the Tigers with 17 points, Nikia Powell added six, and both Olivia Dunklin and Tamara Truitt scored two points.
“We’ve got a bunch of seniors, but it’s the first time a lot of them have seen playing time,” Bogan said.
The Tigers’ second match of the season is set for Tuesday night in Troy against Charles Henderson.
