For the Fort Dale Eagles it took a little time for them to rebound after both squads lost in the championship game of the FDA Thanksgiving Tournament.
For the girls, it took their next scheduled opponent to rebound. The Lady Eagles disposed of the squad from Dixie Academy 64-36.
"The girls game was fairly close in the first half and were able to hit a bunch of threes in the second half and get a big win," said Reggie Mantooth, coach of the Fort Dale Eagles. "We shot the ball fairly well in the second half."
The Lady Eagles set the tempo of the game in the first quarter by jumping out to a 12-1 lead which quickly expanded to 21-13 at the end of the first half.
Fort Dale turned the third quarter into a shooting clinic when Laura Skipper dialed in from behind the three-point arch.
Skipper drained three three's in the third quarter, accounting for 12 of her 20 points on the night. She also finished 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.
In the final period of action, the Lady Eagles outscored their opponents 16-14 to bring the game to its final tally of 64-36.
"Jennifer Pouncey and Laura Skipper both shot the ball really well and led us in scoring," said Mantooth.
The boy's took the floor following the shooting exhibition by the girls, but were unable to match the success of their predecessors.
The boy's squad fell to 3-2 with a 45-42 loss to Dixie.
"The guys really struggled shooting the ball and didn't shoot very well and didn't play very well throughout the game," said Mantooth.
In the first quarter, the boys jumped out to a 17-13 lead, but Dixie fought back to claim a 20-19 halftime lead.
Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter culminating in a 32-32 tie.
"Conyers Poole had a good game and kept us in the game, had 14 points," said Mantooth. "He's about the only one that stood out for the boys."
But, when the final horn sounded, Dixie had pulled ahead 45-42 for the win.
Both teams had a chance to continue streaks and change fortunes Thursday night when Taylor Road Academy came to town.
For the Lady Eagles, it was a chance where everyone on the roster had the opportunity to contribute.
Skipper had seven points, Frances Watts had five and was 3-of-4 from the charity stripe and Lacey Norrell chipped in with eight points to be the teams leading scorer. She also finished the night perfect, 2-of-2 from the free throw line.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early lead, 26-0 in the first quarter.
"It was not a very good girl's team that we played in Taylor Road," said Mantooth. "We were able to get a big lead early and get everybody some experience, so that was good."
That lead expanded in the second, with Fort Dale cruising to a halftime lead of 37-8.
That would be all the scoring that Taylor Road did.
Fort Dale scored 13 points in the third quarter and then nine in the fourth to bring the score to it's final of 59-8.
"Lacey Norrell had a really good game," said Mantooth. "We had been working her some at the point guard position and she did a really good job."
When the Fort Dale varsity took the court, they had one thing on their minds, snapping out of their funk. The Eagles had dropped two in a row and when Taylor Road took the floor, the Eagles took out their frustrations. Fort Dale posted a 64-40 victory and snapped their two-game losing streak.
"They did have a pretty good team," said Mantooth. "They did play a little better than they did Tuesday night. The shot the ball better and were a little more aggressive."
Fort Dale jumped out to an early 16-13 lead and then expanded it to 31-19 at the end of the first half.
That lead was further expanded at the end of the third quarter by the tune of 46-28 and finally 64-40 for the final.
The Eagles were led by Adam Moore with 16 points Adam, David Moore with 14 points and Chuck Barrett with 10.
"Adam Moore really shot the ball well for us," said Mantooth. "David Moore shot the ball well also.
Both of them led us in scoring."
The Eagles will be in action Tuesday when they travel to Troy and face the Patriots of Pike Liberal.
These two squads have met once already this season with Fort Dale pulling away with a decisive victory in the girl's game and a hard fought win in the boys game.
Tipoff for that game is set for 4 p.m.
