The Luverne Tigers' baseball team upended the defending Class 5A State Champions Charles Henderson Trojans in a Thursday night contest last week, 8-7.

The Tigers got on the board first when D.Q. Reed singled and then moved up two bases on an errant pick-off move and a wild pitch. Reed would then come across to score on an infield single by Jacob Sexton to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans were unable to muster an answer in their half of the inning swinging the momentum to the Luverne dugout.

In the third inning, the Tigers pushed three more runs across on two walks, an error and a pair of singles to take a 4-0 lead.

Luverne pitcher Josh Sexton carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning after retiring the side in the Trojans' half of the third.

Luverne plated two more runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Jesse Dixon got things started with an infield single. After an error and a pair of walks the Tigers led 6-0.

The Trojans finally got a hit in the bottom of the fourth inning when Chris Davis doubled down the left-field line. Leeland Farmer followed Davis with a single and Quay McGowan plated the first Charles Henderson run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Davis.

Chris Booker kept the Trojan rally alive by reaching base on an error with two outs. Ben Jones followed with a single that drove in Farmer and cut the lead to 6-2. Jones would eventually come around to score on a passed ball cutting the Tigers lead to just three runs, 6-3.

Josh Sexton helped his own cause in the top of the fifth inning with a home run over the left-center field wall to gain a run back for the Tigers and give them a 7-3 lead.

The Trojans kept pace in the bottom of the fifth when Brian Matney came around to score on a passed ball making it a 7-4 game.

The Tigers added another run in the sixth inning to take an 8-4 lead.

Charles Henderson's bats finally warmed up in the sixth inning. After two quick outs, Booker doubled. An infield single by Jones plated Booker to cut the lead to 8-5.

Jeremy Jones reached base on an error giving Matney the chance to bat.

Matney made the at bat pay off by collecting a single that plated Ben Jones, slicing the Tiger lead to just two runs, 8-6.

Jake Smith retired the side in the top of the seventh without surrendering a run to keep the Trojans' hopes of a comeback alive.

With one out, McGowan hit a towering home run over the left field wall to cut the Luverne lead to 8-7.
