SPECIAL TO THE ADVOCATE
If you’ve accumulated some late fees at the library, you can clear those up by participating in the Greenville-Butler County Public Library’s “Food for Fines” week Monday, Nov. 14 through Saturday, Nov. 19.
During this week, the library will forgive up to $1 in fines for each can of food donated.
Food collected will be donated to local food banks, said Director Kevin Pearcey.
“With the holiday season upon us we thought this was an excellent way to help out people in need while also allowing our patrons to clear up any fines they may have,” said Pearcey.
Pearcey said patrons are not allowed to use the library’s computers or checkout items if they have outstanding fines. “We want the citizens of this city and county to use the library’s services so hopefully they’ll take advantage of this program next week,” said Pearcey. “At the same time, they’ll be helping those who need help the most.”
There is no limit to the amount of fines that can be cleared, but lost or damaged items are not eligible for this amnesty program. The library also will not accept home-canned items, expired, dented, or damaged cans, or cans with the barcode lined or scratched through.
Donations of canned goods are welcome as well, said Pearcey.
Library patrons are allowed to checkout books, books on CD, and books on cassette for up to two weeks and items may be renewed once. Patrons are assessed a .10 cent fine per item, per day overdue. The fines cap at $2.
