An inmate scheduled to be released from the Butler County Correctional Facility on Wednesday has died.
Sheriff Kenny Harden said the inmate was arrested on Feb. 6 for DUI by Greenville police and was about to be released on bond Wednesday morning when his breathing became difficult. Harden said emergency medical personnel were notified, but the inmate collapsed outside of the correctional facility. He said staff began administering CPR, but the inmate was pronounced dead enroute to L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital.
The inmate’s name was not released on Wednesday because Harden said all family members had not been notified. Harden said the inmate was 51 years old, had a prior history of medical problems, and was a local resident.
“We believe it was natural causes but because he was an inmate in the correctional facility, ABI has been contacted and we will assist them in conducting a thorough investigation,” said Harden.
Harden said the inmate’s name would be released at a later date.
