After hearing a proposal earlier this month, the Luverne City Council formally voted to take ownership of the streets in Eastwood County Estates.

That proposal was made at the Feb. 9 meeting, and further investigation found that there are no legalities preventing the city from taking control of the streets.

During construction of the estates, the streets were built to state specifications and code with the idea of eventually turning them over to the city.

The motion passed, and councilman Randall Parker abstained from the vote.

In other business, assistant fire chief and building inspector W.A. Neal brought the issue of fire codes at Luverne High School to the council’s attention.

The occupancy load was set after last summer’s renovation with the chairs fixed together, but if the chairs are not fixed together and tables are added, the occupancy load drops from 460 to 294.

Aside from being wary of the occupancy load, Neal said the beauty pageant went smoothly.

The council also spent time discussing the city’s speed bumps, but no action was taken.
