The Greenville High Tigers won 9-2 yesterday against rival Brantley, despite a stomach virus that devastated their starting lineup.

Coach Brandon Wendling, who coaches the junior varsity squad, commented on the game.

Wendling said the GHS team was crippled from the beginning.

“We didn’t have a lot of our starters,” Wendling said. “Luckily, our substitutes, like Tucker Harrell, stepped it up.”

Raymond Moody had an outstanding game pitching, Wendling said, which helped lead them to victory.

“The second inning rally is what turned the game around,” Wendling said. “We had two outs and no one on when Tucker Harrell hit a line drive to center left to get the rally underway.”

When the offensive fury ended, GHS had cycled through their entire lineup and scored five runs.

“Brantley has been a thorn in the side of this program for the last few years,” Wendling said of the defending Class 1A champions.

Catcher Hunter Harrell agreed.

“We have always played bad against them for some reason,” Hunter said. “It feels good to finally beat them.”

Varsity coach Brad Horn was proud of his kids that stepped up.

“Hunter Harrell started at first for the first time ever,” Horn said. “Moody pitched six innings, gave up two hits and struck out 12 batters.”

Moody batted 3 for 3, Horn said picking up 2 RBIS.

Stewart Moody batted 2 for 4, batting in three runs.

GHS plays its next game against Holtville away on March 6.
