It’s become an eagerly awaited tradition at McKenzie School: fun fractured fairytales performed for the elementary pupils by students from the Lurleen B. Wallace Community College Dramatic Arts Program.

The group gave two performances on Tuesday morning for the K-4 through 3rd graders and the upper elementary students. The youngsters cheered, giggled, gasped and clapped along the way. Some of the actors even slipped into the bleachers with their audience during the performance.

“The LBW students have been coming to put on these plays for us for several years and the kids thoroughly enjoy it,” said MHS principal Randy Williams.

He said the drama team performs at a number of schools within a 40-mile radius of Andalusia.

“It gives our students a fun cultural experience,” Williams said.

And some of those in the audience on Tuesday just might be the ones performing for future elementary students.

“Oh, yes, we’ve had several of our students, including my own youngest daughter, who have been part of the drama team over the years. They offer an excellent two-year drama scholarship – and the school is just down the road from us,” Williams said.

Following the performance, the actors met and shared hugs with several of the students.

Brittany Morgan and Kendall Lowery were especially thrilled to get their photo taken with the colorfully costumed characters, including a pretty princess in pink. “I really, really liked that,” Brittany said with a grin.
