A McKenzie student’s vocal talents are taking her far. Paula Till has earned a spot in the Alabama Vocal Association Solo Competition in Mobile on March 18.
“I made it last year and got a superior rating. I’m hoping to win a medal this year,” said Till. “It would be a nice addition to put on my resume.”
On Wednesday, Till, whose vocal coach is Melba Brown of the University of Mobile, was one of 20 students from across the area flying to New York City for the opportunity to perform at famed Carnegie Hall.
“On Thursday we start rehearsing at 9 a.m. for three to four hours, and then take a break for lunch. Then we go back for another three to four hours of rehearsals. Not a lot of free time,” she admits.
Of course, the way to get to Carnegie Hall, she says with a smile, is “practice, practice, practice.”
A member of the Alabama All-State Choir, the young soprano will also be performing this spring with her fellow choir members in Birmingham.
MHS principal Randy Williams is very proud of his talented student.
“Who knows – the next stop might be ‘American Idol,'” he said.
