Local senior citizens will have the opportunity to learn more about the Yellow Dot Program, which is designed to assist first responders during an emergency, this Friday at the Luverne Multipurpose Center.

The Yellow Dot Program was started to assist senior citizens in the event of a vehicle accident, and it is composed of four parts: a photo, a personal information form, a Yellow Dot Decal and a Yellow Dot folder.

The information form includes the participant’s name, address, phone number of person to contact in an emergency, medical history, allergies, medications and dosage taken, and names of the participant’s doctors.

The Yellow Dot decal is placed in the lower left corner of the rear car window, and first responders have been trained to look for the dot.

In the event of an accident, first responders know to look in the glove compartment for the folder containing the medical information.

“This is a good program set up through ADECA and the Department of Highway Safety to help people get the care they need after a crash,” said chief deputy Jimmy LeCroy.

A meeting about the program will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Luverne Multipurpose Center.

“People can also come by the Sheriff’s Office between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to get their pictures taken and sign up for the program,” LeCroy said. “We’re also going to work up other dates and locations around the county.”
