In an economy where every penny counts, the Butler County Commission is planning to give a few back to its citizens.

At Monday’s regular meeting, the Commission plans to approve a resolution for Butler County to participate in the Alabama’s sales tax holiday – a three-day period during which purchases of certain items are exempt from sales tax.

Alabama’s sales tax holiday covers clothing, school supplies, books, computers and computer equipment.

Each county and municipality in Alabama decides if it will waive local sales tax, collect a portion or not participate in the sales-tax-free weekend. Butler County has particpated in the holiday since its inception in 2006.

“This is something we normally approve during our June meeting,” Commission Chairman Jesse McWilliams said at Thursday night’s work session. “This resolution is the same as it has been for a number of years, and this is something we need to try and get done Monday.”

Alabama’s sales tax holiday is slated for Aug. 5-7. The holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 5 and end at midnight Aug. 7.

Other actions discussed at Thursday’s work session inlcude:

* Seeking a lease agreement with the City of Greenville to use the Greenville Police Department building for voting precinct District 2.

“We’ve put in an application  and now we need to get approval from the city,” McWilliams said.

* The county’s progress in cleaning up the debris from the April 5 storm that tore through Butler County.

“We hope to have the debris cleanup finished by the middle of the week,” County Engineer Dennis McCall said. “Everyone needs to get the debris to the road and we’ll get that wrapped up.”

The Commission’s regular meeting is set for 8:30 a.m. Monday morning.
