An announcement that the Town of McKenzie is considering a ban on golf carts and four-wheelers on its streets and roads has some citizens up in arms.

According to Town Clerk Tina Powell, a number of people voiced their displeasure at the June town council meeting held Monday.

“Clearly, it is against the law to ride four-wheelers, Mules, Gators and golf carts on public roads and streets in Alabama,” said Town of McKenzie attorney Richard Hartley.

“It is a safety hazard. There is no doubt about it.”

According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety, among state requirements are DOT-approved windshields, seat belts, mirrors, four-wheel brakes, headlights, taillights and directional signals — safety features missing from golf carts and four-wheelers.

No official action was taken on the proposed ordinance.

“I am hoping there is a compromise reached on this matter that will satisfy both the citizens and local authorities,” Hartley said.

A type of vehicle referred to as a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV), similar in appearance to a golf cart that meets state and federal regulations, is allowed on public roads.
