Accident leaves county’s road department minus a mechanic

An accident involving two Butler County employees has left the road department without its lone diesel mechanic, according to county engineer Dennis McCall.
The two-car accident happened in late January, he said, on U.S. 31 and involved shop foreman Freddie Watson and mechanic Vernie Scott. McCall said Scott suffered extensive damage to both legs.
“Both of his legs are in pretty bad shape and from what we understand he’s going to need an extended period of rehabilitation,” said McCall.
McCall said the accident happened at approximately 7:30 a.m. when a smaller vehicle crossed the centerline, striking the county pick-up truck Watson and Scott were riding in head-on.
McCall said Scott had been a county employee for six years after retiring from Dowdle Gas in Montgomery.
“We want to send our prayers out to Mr. Scott and his family and hope he has a speedy recovery,” said Jesse McWilliams, chairman of the Butler County Commission.
