Jan Newton, president of the Greenville Camellia Society, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Greenville’s meeting on Jan. 16. Newton gave a detailed account of how Greenville came to be known as “The Camellia City” and discussed many interesting points of camellia history.
She also spoke about the upcoming Greenville Camellia Show on Feb. 15 and 16 at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College and encouraged Rotary Club members to come and see the magnificent displays.
The Greenville Camellia Society will hold an Artisans Market featuring a Gee’s Bend Quilt Exhibition at the Beeland Park Center on the same days. Admission is free to both events.
Newton said, “We want to create a memorable experience through our cross-cultural events in February hoping visitors to our historic city will attend each, have lunch, stay overnight and bring in tourism revenue. We look forward to seeing local residents and their bloom submissions as well.”
