The National Weather Service in Mobile issued an evening weather update around 8 p.m. Heavy snow east of U.S. Interstate Highway 65 will taper off between now and 10 p.m.
An additional 1-2 inches is possible in these areas until the snow ends, with highest probability in southern Baldwin County east into the northwest Florida panhandle.
Snow has ended further west across southeast Mississippi and the far inland reaches of southwest Alabama.
Conditions are life threatening for anybody attempting to travel out in these conditions.
“Our concern is for stranded motorists with wind chills dropping into the single digits tonight,” representatives said.
Life threatening travel conditions coupled with life threatening cold temperatures will persist overnight as snow diminishes across the area. Most area roadways are completely impassible in the wake of the winter storm and folks should remain off the roadways through the morning. Temperatures are expected to plummet into the teens and even some isolated single digits tonight with wind chills well into the single digits and possibly dipping below zero.
Do not attempt to travel within the area tonight and anyone who does attempt to travel may become stranded and could be exposed to these harsh conditions for hours.
