Small-town communities begin to spread holiday cheer fairly quickly after the Thanksgiving feast is cleared from the table. By the first week of December, Santa has made his appearance in Christmas parades and local shops and other organizations have afforded children the opportunity to grab a photo with jolly old Saint Nick while whispering their Christmas wish list into his ear.

And by the time their stockings have been hung by the chimney with care, most children have told half a dozen neighborhood Santas what they want for Christmas. Still, neither children nor their parents are taking any chances on ensuring the North Pole gets the message.

That’s why The Greenville Advocate is delighted to print our children’s Santa Letters each year.  Newspapers have been playing Santa’s helpers for many years and the Advocate staff enjoy collecting information from Butler County elementary schools, typing up the Santa Letters and publishing children’s wishes along with their love for the overgrown elf just in time for a copy of the Christmas edition to reach Santa’s workshop.

Children from Fort Dale Academy, Georgiana School, Greenville Elementary and McKenzie School sent us items on their Christmas list. Many Crenshaw County children want four-wheelers, dirt bikes and Barbie Dream Houses this year.

We chuckle over the children who ask for chickens, puppies or a full-sized farm tractor. But there are also the boys and girls who request an iPad for their brother, or something for mom and dad.

As Christmas draws closer, publishing the Santa Letters helps us prepare to celebrate the holidays. With hearts warm and festive, we join local children who, with visions of sugar plums, anticipate Christmas morning and the celebrations of faith, family, love and giving we anticipate.
