The local American Legion Post 24 will host a Turkey Shoot fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 2 to support Boys and Girls State, a program that educates youth on government operations. Held at the Central Riding Arena/Volunteer Fire Department on Halso Mill Road, the event will feature age, gender, and veterans’ categories, with each shooting opportunity requiring a $5 donation. Proceeds will help sponsor seven local high school students to attend Boys and Girls State at the University of Alabama in June.

“Boys and Girls State just really expands on the students’ understanding of our government and how it functions,” said Legion Commander Lee Tanner. “It’s really in-depth learning but they do it in a fun way.”

Participants must bring their own shotgun, but shells in 12 gauge, 20 gauge and 410 gauge will be provided. Registration is from 9  to 10 a.m., with the competition starting at 10 a.m. Concessions will be available for those attending.
