Butler County native David Norrell has been named the Greenville Advocate Hero of the Week for his decades of service to the community. A well-known figure in Greenville, Norrell’s dedication spans across his roles as a business leader, radio co-host, pastor and musician.

“I was born and raised in Butler County, and graduated from South Butler Academy,” Norrell said. “Then I spent two years at LBW and two more at Auburn.”

Norrell went on to earn a degree in speech and communications in broadcasting, with a minor in marketing, setting the foundation for his wide-ranging career.

Norrell has been married for 39 years to his wife, Melissa, and the couple has three daughters and seven grandchildren. Since 2004, he has served as the Director of Business Development for Regional Medical Center. In addition to his business career, Norrell co-hosts the Morning Show on Q94 alongside longtime friend Kyle Haynes.

As a familiar voice in the community, Norrell says the radio show has offered countless opportunities to connect with local residents.

“We emcee at community events all the time, so we get to enjoy all the stuff like Halloween downtown, the Christmas parade, and City Fest,” Norrell said.

Norrell also serves as a bi-vocational music minister and pastor, currently leading Sardis Baptist Church. His contributions to the Greenville community extend beyond his professional roles. A past president of the Greenville Rotary Club and an officer of the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce, Norrell believes strongly in the value of the community.

“Having been born and raised here, I see the close-knit community atmosphere,” he said. “It’s always been my belief that Greenville is a great place to live, work and raise a family and the people are what make it.”

Norrell’s love for music has also played a major role in his life.

“I’ve been singing forever,” Norrell said. “I was in the first ensemble at LBW and always sang in the church choir. I was also in a gospel group for about four years.”

For 13 years, Norrell served as the music director for “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” a popular local event in downtown Greenville.

Kyle Haynes, Norrell’s radio co-host and longtime friend, spoke highly of his character.

“I’ve worked with David for almost 40 years, 39 years doing high school football and 25 on the radio,” Haynes said. “The main thing is, he’s just a God-fearing family man. David is one of the most selfless people that I know and he’s incredibly community-oriented.”

Haynes added, “I can’t even list all the free events he’s done and boards he’s served on. A lot of things that he does, people don’t even know about. He’s always doing whatever he can to make the community better and help as many people as possible while doing it.”
