On Sept. 10, the Butler County Board of Education held a special budget meeting to discuss the financial plan for the 2025 school year. The meeting, open to the public, was held twice—once at 10 a.m. and again at 6 p.m.—at the Board of Education building located at 211 School Highlands Rd.

During the meeting, the Board revealed that 77% of the general fund, which consists of state and local revenue, will be allocated to cover salaries and benefits for the system’s 365 employees. Insurance benefits costs for the year are projected at $3.5 million.

The school system is also facing a slight decrease in student enrollment. Over the past year, Butler County Schools lost 86 students, bringing the total enrollment to 2,636 — representing a 6.42% decline since the 2019-2020 school year. The drop in numbers may be attributed to population shifts or an increase in homeschooling families.

According to US Census records, the population of Greenville has decreased by 4.7 percent between 2020 and 2023.
