Remember Our Heroes event draws over 150 attendees

The Greenville Lions Club’s annual Memorial Day event, “Remember Our Heroes,” was held on Monday, May 27, at the Greenville High School auditorium, drawing a crowd of over 150 attendees. The event, aimed at honoring those who have lost their lives in service to the country, featured Sergeant First Class Nathaniel Foster as the keynote speaker.
“I hope people enjoyed the speech,” Foster said. “I’m not usually nervous in front of crowds but I put a lot of effort into this because it all meant something to me.”
The event opened with a welcome from Lions Club President David Lovell.
“On behalf of the Greenville Lions Club, I would like to thank those who came out today to remember those who have given their lives in service to our country and to recognize our local veterans. We had a great crowd,” said Lovell. “Sergeant First Class Nathaniel Foster had an excellent presentation and a true highlight was Lion April Lowery leading the crowd in the National Anthem and in singing God Bless America.”
American Legion Post 24 Commander Liza Berry also praised the event’s success.
“It went really well,” Berry said. “I want to say there were over 150 people there, which is great. There was even a World War II veteran.”
Berry also commended Foster’s speech.
“I really enjoyed the speech,” she said. “He did a great job and he really did his research.”
Following the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a lunch provided by Real Pit BBQ in the school cafeteria.
“The food was good. Everyone grabbed their lunch and took it to the cafeteria,” Berry noted. “There was a lot of conversation and people meeting each other.”
The program included an invocation by Charles Box, the JROTC’s presentation of the colors and the pledge of allegiance, and the playing of “Taps” by Lion Jim McGowin. Lion Hubert Little led the salute to fallen heroes and the recognition of veterans.
Lovell stressed that the event could not have been successful without the generosity of its sponsors.
“We would like to thank Match & Mix, Priester’s Retail, Jim McGowin and Real Pit BBQ for making this event possible and to County Wide for performing today,” Lovell said.
