The Butler County Civic League is hosting its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast on Jan 15. Velma Andrews, a Civic League member, said the breakfast is a way to celebrate King’s life and work. 

“It’s a way to celebrate and honor him for all he has accomplished as a leader for African Americans,” Andrews said. 

The league is a non-profit, neighborhood organization with the primary goal of improving quality of life in the neighborhood, and allowing citizens to find a voice in local government. 

The event will include a breakfast and elected officials who will speak to attendees, including U.S. District Judge Terry Fitzgerald Moorer who presides over Alabama’s Southern District. 

Moorer was the first National Guard Military Judge in the United States. He retired in April 2014 as a Colonel after 32 years of service, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. 

“My duties include presiding over all aspects of civil and criminal cases at the trial court level,” Moorer said. “I sit as an appellate judge with the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals when designated by the Chief Judge.”

The honors and awards Moorer has earned include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Case of the Year and the Honorary Police Badge. 

The Greenville High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will be in attendance to support the event with the corps color guard, leading the Pledge of Allegiance, serving food and helping clean up afterwards.
