Juandalynn Givan has declared her candidacy for the 2nd Congressional District seat.

The Birmingham-based attorney made her announcement Friday on Court Square in Montgomery, making reference to civil-rights pioneer Rosa Parks, whose statue stands a short distance from the spot.

“In the heart of Alabama, where the echoes of history reverberate through our communities, I am proud and excited to declare my candidacy for the United States Congress.” Givan said. “I am running with a deep commitment to the people of Alabama, to be a tireless advocate for our shared values and a catalyst for positive change.” 

“As I embark on this journey, I am inspired by the trailblazing women who have come before me. From Rosa Parks, whose quiet strength sparked a revolution, to the countless women who’ve shaped our history, I carry their legacy with me. I believe that a woman’s perspective brings a unique strength to the table, a strength rooted in empathy, resilience, and a commitment to building a better future.” 

Givan, who does not live in the district which spans from Georgia to Mississippi and includes all of Montgomery County down to the northwest portion of Mobile County, said her legislative work in 2010 brought her to the area where she had also lived as a little girl. The Constitution does not require members of the U.S. House to live in their districts.

“As someone born and raised in this great state, I’ve witnessed the strength and resilience of our communities,” Givan said. “From the hills of Birmingham to the plains of Montgomery, our diversity is our strength, and our shared history binds us together. It is with this unity in mind that I step into the arena of public service, fueled by the belief that our voices, no matter where we come from, deserve to be heard in the hallowed halls of Congress.”

The Democrat has embraced a platform including the urgent need for accessible healthcare, environmental justice, infrastructure and economic development. 

“Our state faces challenges that demand bold, compassionate leadership,” Givan said. “The need for accessible healthcare is urgent, and I am committed to fighting for comprehensive reforms that ensure every Alabamian can receive the care they deserve. Our roads and bridges require attention, not just as pathways for travel, but as connectors of opportunity for every corner of our district.” 

As she spoke on banking reform, clean air and creating new jobs, Givan declared her intention to pave the way toward progress.

“This is not just a campaign; it’s a movement for progress,” she said. “Now, more than ever, Alabama needs a leader who not only speaks of change but lives the fight for it every day. I am ready to be that leader, to be your voice in Congress, to work tirelessly for the betterment of our great state.” 

Givan, is among 21 candidates vying for the seat Congressman Barry Moore is choosing to vacate because his home town of Enterprise no longer sits in the newly-draw district. A federal court handed down a decision on June 8 which mandated redistricting and in October the court approved a changed district map. Moore has qualified to run for representative in 1st District.

Thirteen democrats, including Givan, declared their intention to run for the seat. Eight Republicans also qualified.
