Come Monday we’ll honor those that gave their lives for us to enjoy our freedom. The library has several excellent reads about our brave soldiers and the battles they fought, both fictional and non-fictional.

One of the more excellent pieces of fiction about war published in the last 20 years or so is Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried.

You won’t find O’Brien on any bestseller lists because he’s been classified as “literature” in the American Canon. Which is to say that The Things They Carried is book with meaning, one written by a Vietnam veteran trying to come to terms with war that cost his generation so much. Twenty-two intertwined short stories that are beautifully written, yet hauntingly sad.

Of course, in military non-fiction, the late Stephen Ambrose has no equal. Books available here by the famed historian include: Band of Brothers, D-Day, June 6, 1944, The Victors, and The Wild Blue.

The library has joined with the Greenville-Area Chamber of Commerce to host a special After Hours event on June 16 at The Camellia Pavilion starting at 5 p.m. If you haven’t had a chance to do so, come out then and see the new addition to our grounds. Montgomery author K.T. Archer will be signing copies of her new book, The Silver Spoon. This is the first of many such partnerships bringing authors and other artists to Greenville.
