In a Sept. 26 hearing, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles denied a parole request to Raymond Madison, 30.

During the hearing, the board voted to deny parole to Madison, 30, but declined to set a date for his next possible hearing.

Madison is a black male housed in the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, serving out an 87-month term for combined charges from Butler and Baldwin counties. Charges from Butler County include a May 23, 2022 sentence for first-degree receiving stolen property and a June 9, 2022 sentence for first-degree promoting prison contraband. On May 5, Madison was also sentenced to three consecutive 24-month terms for two counts of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle and one count of burglary in the third degree.

While the board permits testimony from witnesses who support or oppose a parole petition, no one appeared to submit evidence for or against Madison’s request. Representatives from District Attorney Charlotte Tesmer’s office are permitted to offer evidence in parole hearings, but according to Tesmer, these instances usually occur when the inmate is serving time for a violent crime against a victim.

In addition to Madison’s current sentence, he was also convicted and was sentenced in May 2021 to serve 24 months in Baldwin County for first-degree theft of property.

On Sept. 26, the board held 24 parole hearings, granting parole to four inmates, continuing one hearing, and denying parole to 20. The board also held seven pardon hearings, granting five pardons and denying two.
