The meek shall inherit the Earth, Matthew 5:5, but why the meek?
Jesus explains this as part of the “beatitudes”. In Matthew 5:5. He tells us that the meek shall inherit the Earth.
Today when we hear this, we consider the meek to be weak, with a very undemonstrative personality. Jesus is not really speaking of these people. Jesus is speaking more of those that are very well trained with a weapon, in his time a sword, but even though they are well trained with the weapon, these persons are even better trained to know when is the right time to use that weapon.
Meekness is not a description of weakness, but a description of power under control. As believers we understand the power that Jesus possessed, however, Jesus was very selective in how he used his power. Self-control is one of the most important traits a good Christian should have – the control of one’s emotions and actions, so that our response to any situation is one that reflects the light of Jesus Christ.
Meekness is not a description of weakness, but a description of those who have lived in Christ, with great understanding and wisdom. The meek are those that have planted themselves in Christ and produce the good fruits of their foundation in Jesus.
Few of us desire to be meek but when we understand the meek, which Jesus speaks of there on the mount, then we should aspire to be meek, that is, to be well trained in our weapon – the word of God. We should be even better trained in when and where to use it for the biggest impact to God’s kingdom. God Bless.
