Greenville High School (GHS) alumni descended upon Tiger Territory over the weekend, for the school’s annual All Class Reunion 2023.
Greenville alumni, Girard Warren, felt inspired by Montgomery schools which hosted reunions and spearheaded the event for graduates of Greenville High School.
“I saw schools in Montgomery hosting reunions for their alumni,” Warren said. “I saw the impact that it had on the comradery of the schools and the community at large.”
For the past 7 years, Memorial Day weekend has been the designated holiday weekend for the three-day event. The main event for the reunion was held Saturday at the Jerome Harris Fields at Dunbar Park, with special events and gatherings going on all weekend long.
Warren said that he gauged interest in having the reunion in a Facebook post, and the response from the community was overwhelming.
“And the rest they say is history,” he said.
The reunion kicked off with a Meet and Greet on Friday night, at Beeland Park.
This year, 29 classes, ranging from 1971-2002 were represented at the reunion.
Dunbar Park was filled with black and gold, tents, food, coolers, music, and plenty of fun and smiles. The reunion gave alumni a chance to reflect, as well as create new memories.
The reunion celebration also created opportunities for fellow classmates to remember and honor those that have passed away.
The Class of 1998 celebrated their 25th class reunion during the event. Kalendria Warren, class representative said, “We want to make sure that we celebrate this milestone with honor and class, by not only celebrating but remembering our loved ones as well.” Kalendria shared the special keepsakes she created for classmates to enjoy, including a memorial fan with images of those lost.
“We want to make sure we celebrate well, and have something to commemorate this day,” she said.
On Saturday, host Girard welcomed everyone to enjoy and have a good time.
“It’s so good to see everyone represented here today,” he said. “We thank the City of Greenville and [You], for allowing this event to become as great as it is,” he added. Evangelist Carolyn Griffin followed with a prayer.
“We give thanks to God for allowing us to gather, because many didn’t make it,” Griffin prayed.
The party kicked off at 12 p.m. and ran until 6 p.m. Classmates enjoyed going down memory lane, line dancing, sampling an abundance of food, taking plenty of pictures, and sparring for the Spirit Stick.
The energy from the class of 2013 was unmatched and they took home the school spirit memento.
GHS alumni said they are already fired up for next year’s reunion, as it continues to grow bigger and bigger every year.
