The Butler County Commission and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office honored Galahad Smith, owner of Southland Builders for his work restoring the Sheriff’s office.

At a March 14 commission meeting, Smith was presented with a token of appreciation for all the hard work that Southland Builders put into remodeling the building which houses the department.

Joey Peavy, Butler County commissioner for District 1 explained why Smith was being recognized with the accommodation.

“We want to thank Southland Builders for the job they did over there at the Sheriff’s building,” Peavy said. “It really looks nice.”

Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond described how Smith’s work enhanced the office.. 

“Once he got it all completed, it really does look good,” Bond said. “It sets the rest of the building off. If you got a minute, walk in and see it, because it’s something we’ve never had here before.”

All the Commissioners gathered around Smith while Peavy presented the acknowledgement.

“Thank you for everything,” Peavy said. “And, we’d like to give you this as an acknowledgement for all your hard work.”

According to Smith, the 3,628 square foot building is in the same location where the old Greenville Gin Company stood in 1903.

“The Sheriff’s seal is made up of around 400 separate pieces of porcelain tiles, carefully inlaid into the floor,” said Smith.

Smith added the seal to the floor at no extra charge to the county. 

“It was in honor of my ancestor John T. Henderson,” Smith said. Smith explained Henderson was his fourth great-grandfather and Butler County Sheriff in 1840.

Smith started Southland Builders in 1999, soon after graduating from Troy University. The company handles design, construction, additions and alterations.

Smith also volunteers as a set builder for the Greenville Area Arts council, among his many volunteer positions in town.
