The Butler County Humane Society held a benefit yard sale Saturday in the vacant building next to the Goodwill Store in downtown Greenville.
Volunteers Kimberly Matthews and Annie Killough worked the event.
Killough greeted shoppers as soon as they walked in the door and quoted sale prices.
Some shoppers brought their dogs in on leashes, while others carried them in their arms.
“We want people to come by,” Matthews said during the sale.
The building, currently housing all yard sale items, has even more leaks in the ceiling than it had last month, Mattews said. She explained that if the group decides to continue their monthly sales, costs would eventually outweigh funds the volunteers could raise.
“We would have to rent a building to store things in, and that would cost money,” Matthews said.
According to Matthews, the humane Society has decided that one more yard sale is all they can do.
“Saturday, March 11 is the last one,” Matthews said. “We need people to come by and get stuff.”
Killough, who has volunteered with the Humane Society for five or six years now, said the group is selling everything off at rock-bottom prices.
The Humane Society has been collecting items for the yard sale for several months. Several items remain in the building.
While almost all the books are gone, Christmas decorations abound along with two tables loaded with dishes and glassware, Killough said.
Pictures, empty frames, and vases cover one table, while purses still hang from a rack.
While this sale raised around $200 for the animal rescues, the society is always in need of donations, Matthews said.
“Every little bit helps,” Killough added.
Volunteers are hoping to sell the remaining items, but if they don’t, some of the items will go to the Trinity Crisis Closet in Greenville, Matthews said.
“What they can’t use will go to Goodwill,” Matthews said.
“People are welcome to come in and get anything they may need,” Killough said.
While the whole point of the yard sale has been to raise money for animal rescues, she added, volunteers want to see all the items go to good homes, much like the puppies they are trying to help.
