The Greenville City Council recently approved spending $7,086.92 for the maintenance and restoration of the historic Pioneer Cemetery in downtown Greenville.

JDM Services, owned by James D. Moody, Jr., is the company that is currently handling the repairs to several graves in the cemetery.

The work represents an ongoing endeavor to not only preserve the county’s history, but to repair and mend the decaying graves and headstones – the last earthly remains of some of Butler County’s founding families.

Moody’s company has been working hard for several months now to repair some of the family plots in the north end of the cemetery. 

Age and nature have both played a part in the current appearance of some of these graves.

The company has previously completed work in the eastern section of the cemetery, where the repairs have improved not only the appearance of the cemetery, but the safety aspect as well.

“Moody’s been doing work all over the cemetery, repairing some of the older graves,” said Charles Newton, a member of the Butler County Genealogical and Historical Society.

With the recently-approved funding, Moody will continue the work he and his team have been doing for a while now.
