Alabama Senator Malika Sanders-Fortier visits Greenville High School

Alabama Senator Malika Sanders-Fortier presented Butler County Schools Superintendent Joseph Eiland with a check for $7,381.57, Monday at the Thirsty Tiger Café inside Greenville High School.
Fortier said her donation serves as a way for her to provide needed assistance to the schools.
“So many things have happened during the pandemic and our children need our support more than ever,” she said.
Eiland thanked her for the donation and explained why these grant checks are so important to the schools.
“Senator Fortier provides money each year to teachers for things like field trips and projects; things they can’t normally afford,” he said.
Fortier said Eiland has plenty happening in the school district.
“I’m very inspired by the work you all are doing here,” she said. “There are so many beautiful faces here that are committed and dedicated to our children.”
After introducing her assistant, Deputy Barbara McGee, Fortier commended the staff with the school system who are putting in work to help the students.
“The real story here is that there are some folks here in Greenville and throughout Butler County who love children, and who want to make sure the children have every opportunity possible right here in rural Alabama,” she said.
The assembled group spoke of the work the students did building the Café, the personal library program at the elementary level that encourages the students to read and take pride in owning their own books and having a personal library.
Fortier said she was reading the Bible one day and the word senator seemed to stand out to her. Even though she comes from a political family, she said she never wanted to go into politics.
The only reference to the word senator occurs in Psalm 105:22, “To bind his princes at his pleasure and teach his senators wisdom.”
Fortier said she always wanted to make changes to our world and our system. At that moment, she decided the best way to do this was by becoming a senator.
“To be present in the very place that makes the laws,” she said. Fortier added she believes in the power of keeping on.
“Don’t give up,” she said. “Every human being has a moment at some point in their life where they get to choose. Am I going to go forward, or am I just going to give up? If you just keep putting one foot in front of the other, there’s always joy and goodness on the other side.”
