Charity yard sale raises money for Butler County Humane Society

The Sales for Tails yard sale held Saturday by the Butler County Humane Society fetched $300 for the organization..
Shoppers found bargains on home goods such as baskets, candle sets, full sets of dishes, and even movies.
There were a variety of toys, including a three-story dollhouse and bears.
Kimberly Matthews, of the Humane Society, had several volunteers helping out.
Jennifer Cole made change and Anne Killough showed off the merchandise.
Junior Humane Society volunteer member Ryan Pickard-Abbey, a sophomore as fit as a pro football player, was there to help with the heavy stuff.
“I love this,” Pickard-Abbey said. I get to get out of the house and do some work. I like working with the animals, especially the dogs.”
His mother, Sarah said she loves the fact her son helps out with the organization.
“He enjoys it so much,” she said.
One customer asked about the grill/smoker that was for sale. Volunteer Killough talked to her about the item while searching for the handmade aprons that were also donated for the sale.
“We have lots of great things,” Killough said.
Another shopper checked out the boxes of shoes for sale.
The lady volunteers helped customers find a variety of items, including books and angel decorations.
“We’ve been here in this location next door to Goodwill for two years now,” Matthews said. “We were at a storage place here in Greenville. We had five units with them. The owner didn’t charge the Humane Society any rent.”
But then, the ownership changed hands and the Humane Society got some devastating news.
“We were told that we would have to start paying rent on the five units. $45 a month for each one,” Matthews said.
Matthews said $225 per month is not an expense the organization could afford while also trying to raise money for shelter animals..
Fortunately, Mike Jackson, owner of the location next to Goodwill, offered a helping hand.
“Mike owns this location and he said we could have this place for $1 a year,” Matthews said.
The current location may be in need of some repairs, but Matthews added, “It’s got a roof over it.”
Cole said the organization holds the yard sale five times a year.
The next Humane Society fundraiser event, “Bark in the Park”, will be held Oct. 1.
This event will take place in Confederate Park in downtown Greenville from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
