The Greenville Police Department responded to shots fired in the area of Cedar Street and North Pine Street between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20.

Chief of Police Justin Lovvorn said officers arrived on the scene to find a male subject on foot who a bullet had grazed.

“He stated that he had been walking down Cedar Street when a vehicle drove by, and he recognized one of the occupants,” Lovvorn said. “He stated that he and the person in the vehicle had recently fought over another issue. He then noticed the vehicle turned around and started driving toward him.”

The victim tried to run away from the vehicle as the vehicle drove toward him. An occupant of the vehicle began firing a gun out the car window at the victim as he ran away. The victim pulled his weapon and returned fire at the car, Lovvorn said. The vehicle then left the area. The victim was confirmed to have a concealed weapon permit.

The victim was 19 years of age and was treated for a minor injury at Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama in Greenville and released.

The Greenville Police Department collected multiple items of evidence at the scene and the surrounding area, reported Lovvorn.

Greenville Police Department investigators quickly located a suspect, Jabbarius Love, a 21-year-old black male. When investigators confronted Love with the evidence collected, he admitted to shooting at the victim.

Love has been charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied building, and criminal mischief 2nd degree.

The investigation has identified two additional suspects in the vehicle with Love at the time, and additional charges are pending for those suspects, Lovvorn said.

Lovvorn said the investigation is still ongoing and investigators are looking into another incident that happened a day or two before the shooting that may have been the driving force for the shooting.

“I would like to thank the patrol and investigations divisions for their quick and professional response to this violent incident,” Lovvorn said. “Officers were able to arrive on the scene, once notified, quickly to diffuse the situation while investigators worked night and day to locate and arrest the suspect before another violent act could be committed. We will always pursue the maximum charge and punishment for anyone who puts innocent people at risk by committing an act of violence within the city of Greenville.”
