Greenville Mayor Dennis McLendon appeared on the Kyle and Dave Morning Show this morning to tell residents to mark their calendars. Tuesday February 22, 2022 at 6 p.m. there will be a public forum regarding the process and procedures involved in creating a Greenville City School system. The Forum will take place at LBW at the Wendell Mitchell Conference Center in Greenville.

“I am not having a council meeting or anything, we will just have somebody there that has done this thing a good bit and they’re going to tell us what the process is and what they suggest,” McClendon said.

The group who will be providing the information at the meeting have experience with changing over to a city school system. McClendon said there will be a CO who can explain how it goes, a CFO, and an attorney at the meeting to help answer questions and provide information.

“You know I have heard everything you could hear about this and how it happens and what it is whether you are for or against or whatever, and that is your right. But we are going to hear from somebody that has done this before. It is going to be like a surgeon who has done all these surgeries and that is who you go to,” McLendon said.

After the forum, the city council will decide if they move to the next step of the process at another scheduled meeting.

The format of the meeting is unknown at this time but McLendon said the meeting is solely to provide information and answer questions.

“We are not going to get into a he said, she said,” McLendon said. “Anyone who has been around me knows I am not part of that controversy. I do think that we are going to have an opportunity for people to be able to answer questions.”

One of the main questions that will be answered is what is done with students living outside of the city limits.

“If you can’t do this without taking care of the kids outside the city limits I would not be for it,” he said. “That’s not fair to someone who has gone to Greenville High School all the way through to the tenth grade and then all of a sudden you say you can’t come here anymore unless you pay a bunch of money.”

The mayor says he is not 100 percent sure what he is going to vote and wants to wait until after the meeting when he has all the information before making that decision.

“I believe in public education. The city of Greenville has put anywhere from $500k to 800k a year in that school out there,” McLendon said. “You need to hear it from them and not me because I have never been a part of it; they have.”
