Questions have been circulating as to what will happen for schools in Crenshaw County after Thanksgiving given COVID-19 cases are beginning to creep higher.

Crenshaw County School Superintendent Dodd Hawthorne said that students will report to school after the holiday.

“At this time we are not planning to go virtual after Thanksgiving,” he said.  “Our plans are to return to traditional school on Nov. 30.”

Hawthorne said initially, students were to be in the brick and mortar school on Monday and Tuesday of next week, but school administrators decided to hold E-learning days.

“Students will complete assignments virtually from home on those two days,” he said. “The reason behind that is our COVID-19 numbers have increased over the last week so this will allow for an extended Thanksgiving break and for us to do some extensive cleaning in our schools. Again our intentions are to return to school on November 30.”

Crenshaw County EMA Director Elliott Jones updates the county’s COVID-19 numbers daily.

“Our total case count is 526, with 34 positive tests within the last 14 days,” he said. “We have 28 confirmed deaths at this time.”

Jones encouraged all residents to continue to protect themselves and others why wearing facial coverings, social distancing, isolating and frequent hand washing.
