The Butler County Board of Education confirmed the increase of COVID-19 cases at McKenzie and Georgiana Schools.

McKenzie Schools had a second grade student test positive for the virus, resulting in 12 of their classmates returning home to quarantine and continue learning remotely.

The student has several siblings that attend McKenzie Schools, but none have reported back positive at the time of press.

One student has tested positive at Georgiana, and six other students were sent home to quarantine.

At the meeting, the board approved advertising for bids for Greenville Elementary School’s roof.

Superintendent Joseph Eiland says renovations in other parts of the building have been put on pause due to construction needed to the roof.

The board will also hold a work session Oct. 6 to discuss plans to use a grant from the state that includes a $3.7 million bond issue for building projects.

Other matters discussed in the meeting included school attendance.

Approximately 50% of Butler County students are reporting to in-person classes. Mckenzie Schools currently hold the highest attendance.

The board also announced the Butler County Teachers of the Year 2019-2020 winners Alison Edwards of Georgiana Schools and Monica Robinson of Greenville Middle School.

Nominees and school winners include Heather Conway, W.O Parmer; Delicia Hall, Greenville Elementary School; Rodney Seale, Greenville Middle School; Angelica Crenshaw, McKenzie.

The board held an executive session, but no item was voted on as a result.

The board’s next scheduled meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22.
