The Georgiana Panthers may have lost to the Florala Wildcats last week, but the Panthers are continuing to improve in areas that they’ve struggled in since the start of the season, according to Head Coach Ezell Powell.
“The kid’s didn’t give up,” Coach Powell said. “There were areas we improved in and are continuing to work on.”
The Panther defense guarded its territory against the Wildcats during the first play of the game. A series of incomplete passes and tackles by the Panthers, including a major stop by junior Kentavius Williams, kept the Wildcats from scoring a touchdown.
Senior Azenda Pennington was set to receive the punt return for the Panthers. Georgiana had little yardage gain, and an out-of-bounds punt put the Wildcats in scoring position.
Florala scored the first touchdown of the game.
The Panthers continued to hold their own against the Wildcats.
After the Panther defense successfully blocked Florala from scoring again, the Panthers were able to score the team’s first touchdown of the game. A successful two-point conversion put the Panthers 8-6.
Before the end of the first half, Kaveon Miles and Bryant Mitchell both gained yards for the Panthers, Mitchell carrying the ball for a first and ten twice.
In the second half of the game, Pennington carried the Panthers’ second touchdown of the night.
Marques Payton defended Panther territory multiple times until the final call of the game.
The final score was 14-42.
This week, the Panthers will be working to improve skills all around.
“We’re working on execution all the way around,” Coach Powell concluded.
The Panthers will face the Kinston Bulldogs in a home conference game at 7 p.m. Friday and will also be the school’s homecoming game.
