Though people won’t be able to socialize at Tiger Stadium as in years past, a dazzling display of pyrotechnics is set to return to the Camellia City July 4 to celebrate America’s independence.

The event at 9 p.m. on Saturday will be the 16th annual “Celebrate America” fireworks display and will be launched from near Greenville High School’s Tiger Stadium. However, the year’s event will be different due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon said that the annual “Celebrate America” fireworks show is a tradition that he, along with the City Council look forward to each year.

“The City of Greenville has sponsored the annual fireworks show for more than 15 years and it’s always an impressive show enjoyed by everyone in the community,” McLendon said.

Due to the pandemic, this year’s event will only be a fireworks show and there will be no activities inside Tiger Stadium or field area.

“We invite everyone to find a perfect spot to park their car or grab a comfy chair on their porch or lawn and enjoy the fireworks celebration,” McLendon said.

Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tracy Salter said that in order to comply with CDC, city and county guidelines of social distancing in the wake of COVID-19, the Chamber will not host any activities and no one will be allowed to sit in the stands or on the field, but, she added that the show will go on.

“The Chamber loves the annual ‘Celebrate America’ event and we are always excited to host games and fun activities on the field, but we, along with the City of Greenville, are committed to ensuring our community’s safety by practicing social distancing and avoiding large gatherings,” Salter concluded. “This year’s show will be just as spectacular as always, the fireworks will set the sky ablaze with a large and impressive patriotic fanfare.”
