Mayor Dexter McLendon is working hard to ensure every person in Greenville is counted during the 2020 census. In the midst of our altered lifestyles during the COVID-19 pandemic, there lies a great opportunity and responsibility for residents to be counted during the 2020 Census.

“The 2020 census is very important to the future of Greenville, as we directly benefit from the federal programs whose funding allocations are determined in part by census data,” Mayor McLendon said.  During the 2010 census, many rural areas of Alabama had low response rates. “If we don’t get our entire community involved in 2020, the federal money we are now receiving for our schools, roads, seniors, healthcare and other programs will be diverted to other cities and states,” Mayor McLendon added. “In 2020, we need to keep that funding, which amounts to about $1,600 per person, in Greenville and in Alabama.”

“If residents are accurately and completely counted, the federal funding allocated to Greenville could be substantial. However, if we are undercounted, we could lose our fair share of federal funding and also lose congressional representation. Your voice matters, and we all have a say in the outcome of the 2020 census” Mayor McLendon explained.

Starting in mid-March 2020, households throughout the state will have received a questionnaire from the U.S. Census Bureau with instructions on completing 2020 census forms. The Census Bureau is encouraging an online response but will have a toll-free number for households to submit their information over the phone or to request a traditional paper form. The Census Bureau plans to mail paper forms to households in rural areas with potentially low Internet access. The information collected during the census is confidential and cannot be used against a person by any group or agency.

“The end goal is for all of our residents to participate,” Mayor McLendon said. “Greenville cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. Let’s get in the game and show them that we count and that Alabama counts. Join me in fulfilling our civic obligation: complete your census form.”

In the midst of COVID-19, the US Census bureau is encouraging citizens to take advantage of the many ways to submit your questionnaire this year: by phone (844-330-2020), online (Mycensus2020.gov), or through the mail. All of those options keep citizens safe and assist with adhering to social distancing guidelines. Do your part and be counted.
