Butler countians attend state Bicentennial Summit

A group from Butler County recently attended the Alabama Bicentennial Community Summit at the RSA Plaza Grill in Montgomery. Attendees from organizations from the State of Alabama who had received community grants from the Alabama Bicentennial Commission were recognized and honored.
Charlotte Spann, President of the Spring Creek/Steiner’s Store Homemakers Club, represented the club, which received a grant for the “Steiner Store/General Robert E. Steiner” historic marker, during the Wednesday, Sept. 4, event.
Gloria Hartley, club officer, represented The Searcy Homemakers Club, which received a grant for the “Searcy School House” marker.
Annie Crenshaw, Chair of the Butler County Bicentennial Committee, assisted both clubs in obtaining their markers. They were delighted to be awarded grants for their much-deserved historic markers.
Attending the Summit was Kathy Smyth of the Crenshaw County Bicentennial Committee, who is also Executive Director of the Butler County Children’s Advocacy Center. Barbara Middleton and Pamala Nolan represented the Butler County Bicentennial Committee.
Participants were treated to a welcome speech by Alabama Senator Arthur Orr, Chair of the Alabama Bicentennial Commission, with remarks by U.S. Congressman Robert Alderholt and Alabama’s Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth.
Jay Lamar, Executive Director of the Alabama Bicentennial Commission, congratulated the grant recipients and thanked them for their hard work on their local Alabama Bicentennial events. She distributed a Certificate of Appreciation from the Alabama Bicentennial Commission to each attendee.
Partner organizations at the luncheon included the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Alabama Humanities Foundation, and the Alabama Tourism Department. Their directors discussed the many grant opportunities available and the various ways their agencies can offer grass roots support to communities across the state.
Mark your calendars! The Butler County Bicentennial Celebration will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Confederate Park in Downtown Greenville. The Bicentennial of our county and our state will only happen once in our lifetimes – let’s make the most of it!
