The Greenville Advocate has learned that a former Butler County Schools superintendent could lead one of the largest districts in the country if the Fulton County Schools in Georgia tap him to lead the district.

Dr. Mike Looney, who served in Butler County as superintendent from 2005 until 2009, is currently the superintendent of the Williamson County Schools in Tennessee. He joined WCS in 2009 and prior to his time in Butler County, he served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the Montgomery Public Schools from 2003 until 2005.

“Dr. Looney has a very impressive background and track record of success during his 10 years as superintendent in his current district,” Fulton County School Board President Linda Brant said in a release. “The Board believes his experience and skills will compliment the amazingly talented teachers, principals and staff and our focus on achievement. We are excited for Dr. Looney to visit our schools and engage with the community over the next few days and weeks.”

Looney has a doctorate in educational leadership and administration from the University of Alabama and has been a superintendent for 14 years. Under his supervision, ACT scores in Williamson County have risen from and average of 22.7 to 25.4, and the district had increased participation and the pass rates in AP, dual enrollment and dual credit courses. In 2015, Looney was named by his peers in Tennessee as Superintendent of the Year.
